There’s no better place to be than Hoover on a warm spring day. Consider this your guide to the festivals, Easter egg hunts, sports and community events taking place in April.

1. CELEBRATE HOOVER DAY: Consider this your invitation to the city’s annual celebration – a free, four-hour event featuring numerous exhibitors, carnival rides, live entertainment and the customary giant apple pie you can sample with a dab of ice cream on April 27 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Veterans Park on Valleydale Road. Park at Spain Park High School and take a complimentary shuttle to the festivities.

2. COMMUNITY EASTER EGG HUNT: Get those baskets ready! Bluff Park United Methodist Church will host an Easter egg hunt for families. The fun will unfold in the gym and outside areas. April 13, 9-11 a.m.

3. INVERNESS VS. CANCER GOLF TOURNAMENT: The inaugural Inverness vs. Cancer golf tournament will be held April 1 at Inverness Country Club in honor of longtime golf pro Dave Ragan Jr. Lunch is at 11 a.m., and an awards presentation (with light hors d’oeuvres) to conclude the tournament. The entry fee is $150 per golfer. Hole sponsorships are $250 per hole. There will be special prizes on all Par 3 holes, and Hole 6 will be a Money Hole. All proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society in Ragan’s honor.

4. KING’S HOME SHELBY AUXILIARY TABLESCAPES: Enjoy beautifully decorated tables and quiet shopping at this annual event that helps King’s Home Shelby Auxiliary meet needs of women and children living at the home. Doors open at 10 a.m. at Metropolitan Church of God on April 17 for refreshments and the silent auction. Former First Lady of Alabama Patsy Riley will be honored, and Donna Allen, music evangelist and conference speaker, will be the guest speaker. This year’s theme is “Jewels in His Crown.”

5. JUDY M. MERRITT MEMORIAL 5K: The fifth annual Judy M. Merritt Memorial 5K and Family Day Eggstravaganza is free and open to the Jeff State family and the Birmingham community on April 20 at Veterans Park on Valleydale Road. The 5K starts at 9 a.m., Family Fun Day is from 9-11 a.m. and the Eggstravaganza is at 10 a.m. Visit jeffersonstate.edu/judy-m-merritt-memorial-5k/ for more details or to register.

6. HOOVER CITY SCHOOLS CAREER FAIR: The first Hoover City Schools Career Fair is set for Friday, April 12. Designed to seek motivated candidates for HCS positions, the Career Fair will be held at The Hoover Met in two shifts: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. Representatives from each HCS school will be on hand during those times, as well as contacts from key HCS departments/divisions including Operations, Transportation, and the Child Nutrition Program. Registration is requested but not mandatory. The Hoover Metropolitan Stadium is located at 100 Ben Chapman Drive, Hoover 35244.

7. DHI SCHOLARSHIPS FOR HOOVER SENIORS: Destination Hoover International will award two scholarships, each in the amount of $2,000, this spring to a Hoover High School senior and a Spain Park High School senior. Jubilee Joe’s will hold a crawfish and crab boil the week of April 23-28 to raise money for the scholarships. Eligible students who are graduating in May and attending college with a major in an international field are encouraged to apply. 8. HOOVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY EVENTS: The Hoover Historical Society will welcome Gregory Evan Thompson, grandson of Evan Hale, as special guest at the group’s annual membership tea on April 7 from 2-4 p.m. at the Hale-Joseph House, 2136 Bluff Road. Thompson’s grandfather, Evan Hale, helped build the house in 1910. Thompson will also be the speaker at the historical society’s special meeting on April 9 at 1 p.m. at Shades Crest Baptist Church.
